Stephanie and Scott were consummate characters for sure. From their penchant for breaking legs, to their apparent obsession with taking photographs in different locations (As you’ll see on their poster) they have great stories to tell and you can see that they live life to the fullest.

Her father gave a speech that even left me whimpering behind the camera. It was really touching.

So on May 11th, the day of this wedding, it rained. As a Boston Wedding Photographer we are prepared for this sort of thing. We brought them to several locations where rain wouldn’t hinder our plan. Of course, we couldn’t predict the amount of wind out there, so we did get hit by a decent wallop of wind.

But we persevered, as we always do. We were in luck that Stephanie and Scott are also the types to go the extra mile and chug through anything that stands in their way.

Abbey and Andrew were late in their booking, the phrase goes ‘Saving the best for last’ and that may very well be the case. I’m really looking forward to their outdoor wedding, i can’t wait to see how the photographs turn out.

Andrew and Abbey were a blast to work with. They were energetic, and i think i broke a personal record for the amount of time we took. But it was all worth it, the locations and their bright personalities really showed through in the photographs. Andrew was rather… reticent about this whole session at first. But he warmed up quickly and went the extra mile, err.. hour.

Abbey and Andrew proclaim the Zakim ‘their’ bridge. So it had to be included…

Jolene and Chris came prepared and accessorized. Got to love that.

We went around the city with Jolene and Chris to many spots that were important to them both. Stoddards? Think – Restoration Hardware mixed in with a bar. This cozy little bar near downtown crossing is where they met, so naturally we had to head back there.

Alternatively, we also went to some of my locations which I love to frequent, doing a lot of Boston Engagement Photography, i know they photograph very well. Chris and Jolene were very patient with my perfectionist traits And while we didn’t steal the scooter outside their place (Like I had secretly wished)… we did manage to find some unusual nooks which I haven’t photographed before.

Their infectious love shines through in their attitudes as well as their photographs. Enjoy!

When you get a friend of Sayjal’s to come in, you know it’s not going to be something small or ordinary. When Niki came in, she told us of her grand plans and we are very excited for her and Vimal’s wedding.

Great couple, great energy and most important to the photographers – willing to go that extra mile to get great photographs.

It sounds self-serving to say something like that. But, as a Boston Indian Engagement Photographer, we aren’t static stoic objects, we are human also. When couples come energized and show that extra willingness to try something new, it pushes us further and harder as well. Overall a win-win for everyone.

Diane and Jeff were difficult to schedule because they both had to be available and fly out from Minneapolis. But once we got them here, things went off without a hitch. Very fun couple, lovingly, and ready to work! Of course when I found out Jeff was a commercial pilot, we talked about military and civilian aircraft (a side hobby of mine besides a being Boston Engagement Photographer) for the entire session. (Sorry Diane)

Diane and Jeff are the quintessential couple that not only work for the photographs, but also brought some nice props to add visual interest. And I think they worked just swimmingly! The balloon shot with the wind blowing and them kissing, fantastic!

I met Sarah and Jim late afternoon on a breezy April weekday. Short hair and breezy days means lots of waiting for the right moments. Luckily, as Boston Indian Engagement Photographers we have fantastic clients with plenty of patience.

Sarah and Jeff are atypical as clients of ours in the fact that both of their families are from the Kerala region. Our first clients from that area. And then when I heard they are getting married there in July, I told them I have to go. Much like myself, we were relegated to the family photographer, so that was a no-go. I cried myself to sleep that night…. I really wanted to go back to Kerala. Maybe next year.

Anyhow, I got over it and continued with their session. Sarah’s nervous laughter made my job easy and their love for each other shone through in the photographs perfectly. Enjoy!

Every once in a while you have to throw your expectations and preconceived notions right out the window.

After returning from Jaipur we were contacted about setting up a shoot in Delhi. After making some calls, we had a model, an amazing dress manufacturer and a location set. Everyone who has experience in all things India knows that you need a plan B and oftentimes even a plan C. So i made sure to have plan D, to ensure things went off without a hitch.

We blew through plan A and B in the first 15 minutes. Plan C involved a little bribery with the police and long periods of waiting, but we finally got through the shoot. Tarun Tahiliani gave us two of his latest dresses for us to incorporate into our shoot and we were let loose around Delhi to use them as we saw fit. Each dress was extremely heavy when held only in your hands, though once on the model, she confirmed that it was bearable since the weight was distributed through the body.

Shooting on the street in India isn’t as hard as it may first seem, we have experience dealing with all sorts of incidentals. But shooting in the middle of Delhi on a busy weekday can test the patience of any seasoned photographer. Luckily, we over-prepare.

After the shoot, we returned to the Tarun Tahiliani factory and that’s where our expectations were blown away. Tarun Tahiliani’s factory is in a very unassuming location outside Delhi. The preconceived notions i had were that we’d enter some musty factory filled with underpaid and overworked employees.

More wrong – i could not be. Not only was the factory awesome in its layout, but it also was extremely clean, orderly and full of life. The workers are hand-picked either from university design backgrounds or descendants of bygone era generations of specialist seamstress fame. I was surprised to find out that Tarun himself comes to his office every day. Many fashion designers reside in some vacation retreat and watch their bank accounts grow.

Tarun not only is in daily attendance at the factory, but he also has his hand in everything. And i do mean everything. Each swatch of material, each employee, each meeting, he’s there and active. We got to see him in action at one of his meetings and instead of seeing a bunch of impotent employees amongst Tarun at his huge conference table, they were all actually laughing and seemingly having a great time. Another unexpected surprise.

Overall it was an eye-opening experience on many fronts. Enjoy the fruits of our labor! …

Here is one of the seamstresses that Tarun Tahiliani employs. We were told he’s a third generation seamstress that specializes in silk work. One thing you notice is that everyone has a specialty. Nobody is a jack-of-all-trades here.

Sameer is also a third generation seamstress that specialized in edge work.

Here is where the process starts. Tarun’s and his stylists get inspired by something, they concept the design in drawings, those drawings turn into larger drawings for patterns and material swatches and then Tarun has to approve each and every design. Not bad, not bad at all.

Here is where the designer/stylists sit. This is where they gather inspiration and turn that inspiration into products. Fascinating to see something from inspiration, concept, design to final product.

The only people to visit this room are Bollywood stars and I assume extremely well-heeled daughters of business tycoons. But seriously, this is the boutique portion of the facility. This is where VIP’s come to customize a dress and ensure their fitting is absolutely perfect. I’m not allowed to say how much the dress in the middle here costs, but let’s just say that you could trade it for a BMW or Mercedes no problem. All of Tarun’s most exclusive designs are held here. I can just imagine how special a bride must feel when they have the whole boutique to themselves and the undivided attention of some of the best designers in the industry…

You can customize down to each and every jewel. Insanity!

Please forgive the lapse in blog posting. Between our own marriage and buying a house, we’ve been quite busy from the end of November til now, end of January. Expect regular postings to continue from this point on.

Gujarat Indian Wedding Photographer.

I could call myself that for a weekend.

What else does one need to say? I’ve shot quite a few weddings in my professional career and i have to say that shooting an Indian wedding is not only the most challenging type of wedding to photograph, but it can also be the most fun as well. When i get home after an Indian wedding, i typically pass right out, it takes everything you have right out of me. Shooting an Indian wedding, in India, forces you to bring your ‘A-game’. You have to be ready for anything and everything. And luckily, I was.

Anjali and Sashi are a fantastic couple. They both have a style – Anjali is very part of the moment and Sashi is much more laid back and takes in the scene. They both knew they wanted some photographs to be taken the day before the wedding, so as soon as we flew into Ahmedabad, we headed to Adalaj Stepwell and another stepwell of which name I’m forgetting. They were both amazing and provided picture-perfect backdrops for the type of shoot we were looking to do. That night, the Garba took place outside their family home.

The next day, we headed to Nadiad (A suburb of Ahmedabad) where their family house was. Beautiful town, fairly small and relatively quiet. They had their Grah Shanti, Haldi and wedding ceremony on this day. All the festivities were held at a place seemingly built for wedding ceremonies called Sangath Party Plot.

The weather was perfect and the day went seemingly without a hitch. Couldn’t ask for more than that. They both have great families and I personally had a great time photographing their events.

After years of documenting other couples romances, learning their personal stories and most certainly what makes most couples ‘tick’… I figured it was time to tell my story. I’m usually fairly private when it comes to my personal life. However, several of our friends and family couldn’t make it to Delhi. So this will be a photographic and novel placeholder for those that couldn’t make it and I guess now – for the world to see.

Renu and I met just under two years ago. We’ve had our very own version of a whirlwind romance and here I sit at Schiphol Airport spilling the proverbial ‘beans’… Renu and I didn’t hit it off immediately. Actually when I first met her, I thought she was standoffish and rather brute in her demeanor and was put off by this. Our first ‘date’ was a complete disaster. Coincidentally enough, as I sit here at Schiphol Airport – I brought Stroopwaffels to our first date. Thinking back, I have no idea why I brought those to our first date. Moving on… her standoffish demeanor was off-putting at first but then I realized that people with this demeanor oftentimes are equally as passionate about things they hate and love. I personally believe that people like this have huge caring hearts, and they put on this shell-like facade because of past experiences.

I guess for Renu and myself, it was fate that I saw right through her. As the relationship progressed I learned that she also had the innate ability to see through me as well. I guess this works well, as we both have the ‘feature’ where we basically talk before we think, particularly when in an aggravated state of mind. However, one of the things I love most is Renu’s default state, which is just short of giggly (She gets her sense of humor from her Dad and her corny jokes from her Mom) and we both share the ability to laugh at the most dire of personal circumstances and work towards a solution (Attempting to buy a house one month before the wedding comes to mind.) We work well together, really well. We are passionate about things that we care about and sometimes even little things, like avoiding parking tickets. Sorry Renu, your secret is out there now… she goes berserk when I get parking tickets. She left before me for India by a week, and since this has been our only time apart for many days and I’ve again realized I can’t live without her. I could barely bring myself to leave the house when she wasn’t around, other than last minute errands for the trip etc… I love her dearly. It wasn’t just the lack of presence… it’s more granular than that. Things like hearing her folding the blanket on the bed in the morning. Hearing her drag the comfortable chair to the desk so she can start her workday from home. The smell of her skin lotion that permeates the loft when I come out of the shower… The odd things you remember when someone ceases to exist in the immediate sense.

For those not familiar with the situation… we are getting married in Delhi next week. Considering 173 guests are from her side and 17 are from mine, it was a no-brainer to have it there. It’s been almost a year in the planning and Renu’s parents have bared most of the brunt in planning things for our wedding. It has taken a bit of a toll on them I’m sure, but since Renu is the last sibling, hopefully they can rough out this one last time. Thank you guys! We will make it up to you! We have 17 people from the US coming to our wedding and they are all coming and going at different times. Which has made planning insanely difficult, but I know in the end – it’s going to be worth it for everyone. My friends and family and Renu’s family will be taking a tour of Rajasthan after the wedding itself.

In the little planning that we have done from home, I’ve found the process rather perplexing and downright aggravating to say the least. Obviously, I was concerned with which photographer we’d use. We were originally told that we’d be using the photographer that photographs all family events by default. (Possibly offensive if we didn’t use him). I was ok with it in the end, but was hoping for more of a photo-journalistic approach. When we were then told that the default photographer was going into retirement, the flood gates opened up and I started investigating. I probably emailed 7-8 photographers in Delhi alone. From those 8, 2 came back as actually not being from Delhi, 4 didn’t email back at all and two started to email us back, but after a couple of emails, disappeared. It was extremely interesting being on the other side of the table and unfortunately rather defeating being across oceans and unable to meet these two respondents face-to-face or get into a normal rhythm of communication and finally arrive at the terminal plateau of no communication.

So in the end, the default photographer was asked to do one last job. And he will.

As I fly to India again, I find myself particularly retrospective in what has gotten me to this point in my life… all the trials and tribulations. I find myself asking ‘What makes me keep coming back to this country, time after time? Well, I guess that’s an easy one this time, my wedding!. But beyond that, even if I weren’t having a wedding there, I’d find us traveling here for fun as well. From the busy streets of Calcutta, to the backwaters of Kerala, I’ve seen quite a large swath of this amazing country. And now finally, some of my closest family and friends will be able to experience a place that has truly changed my life. A place that continues to change my life and my attitude towards life in general each and every time I go there. Having traveled to quite a few countries on different continents, I can honestly say that only India has this profound effect on me. Sadly, for every opinion you hear like mine, you hear 20 opposing views of India. But I can break it down rather easily for who should visit India… if your personality is go-with-the-flow, you will prosper in India. If you are anything but go with the flow, avoid it at all costs. I mentioned in a previous blog post that India is a country that can swallow-up and spit out even the most experienced of world travelers.

Now as I sit here typing away, I’m wondering if the effects this country has had on me will also have a positive effect on my friends and family. I just don’t know… but certainly hope so. In my mind, I can’t see how someone wouldn’t be transformed by India, especially upon returning to the US. No longer do I sweat the small stuff, no longer do I let material things play a leading role in my life. Renu is from here, so it’s already engrained in her. But I really hope that friends and family arrive in India with an open mind and an open heart. Only good things can come from all of this.

Renu and I aren’t having an overly lavish wedding by any means. Just a simple combined Mehndi/Sangeet and the wedding ceremony on the next night. Seeing my side being forced to dance to Bollywood songs and dancing in the Baraat will surely be a highlight for me.

Well now that I’ve got all that out of my system and it’s now time for me to catch my flight to Delhi, enjoy the photographs that will be posted in the coming days and weeks!

Week 1

So upon arriving after 18 hours of flying, my in-laws decided that we will drive 7 hours to Bareilly, India, to attend the wedding of Renu’s cousin Shilpa. Uttar Pradesh state is not kind on those that drive through it. Very rough roads, and that’s coming from someone that’s sampled a lot of rough roads in India!

Upon leaving Bareilly, we hit a really large traffic jam, at 1am. Again, this is coming from someone with some experience in Indian traffic jams.

This was my view for over an hour and a half… sitting there not even idle. The engine was off for that long.

Week 2

So far we are meeting with vendors. Since we are having our wedding in Gurgaon, we have to find all of our vendors in Gurgaon. You find vendors here in India in the mostly unlikely of places… a small storefront produces nicer cakes than that beautiful fake wannabe European cake-haus we saw in Delhi. You never know what you will find over here…

Yoga folks across the street, they start at 4:30am each and every morning. That’s called dedication. Imagine the first time hearing this though… they do different ‘sound’ exercises. Including loud excessive laughing. I’m still trying to capture that. I’ll get it one of these mornings…

So today, I’m having tea, Renu’s dad makes the best tea! As i open the paper and see that Gangham Style has made its way to Baraats (Dance processional) here in India. We heard it at Shilpa’s wedding in Bareilly last week being played to people dancing, but this is the first I’ve heard it played at Baraats. Awesome.

Renu went today to have her Bridal trial… all is looking good.

Last last night, we had some additions, Chris, Nicole, Leslie, Thomas, Lucy and of course the kids, Brendan and Aiden. At dinner some of the family and friends had a chance to meet and talk:

Post Wedding Trip

After the wedding, we decided to have a trip around Rajasthan with folks from my side and Renu’s side. We visited Delhi proper, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur. We didn’t collectively have time to visit Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and some further spots. But it appeared that everyone really enjoyed the trip. Despite some long spells on the bus between major cities.

We decided to head to Sadar Bazaar in Gurgaon. Chris’s face outside the auto rickshaw was that of utter amazement that he was still in one piece…

Sadar Bazaar. This isn’t a normal market or shopping center in India. This is a local market for cheap stuff where you can find anything and everything. Fantastic place to break foreign folks in.

No trip to India would be complete without seeing one of the 7 wonders of the world. Every time i see it, it’s as stunning as the next. This particular trip, we stayed in Agra so that we could see it in the evening and the next morning. I like the morning shots from Metab Bagh better.

Taj Mahal in the AM, i have to say, it’s really worth waking up at 6am and dodging the morning traffic to come to Metab Bagh to view the Taj. We had the park all to ourselves for the most part. Even the hawks were asleep, so it was rather pain free being here in the early morning. The mist and fog added a certain mystique to the scene, which i thought was really cool:

Today we spent in Jaipur. The pink city. We saw some great sites and really fell into a rhythym regarding our timings indoors and out.

Fresh coconut water and paste. While i personally don’t like coconut i can appreciate the freshness and how good it must taste. Here in India, you drink the juice first, at the cart. Once complete, you ask the coconut-wala to cut it open further and make a spoon out of the siding for eating the coconut paste at the bottom, apparently very tasty!

We figured a lot of folks were getting home-food-sick, so we made a stop at none other than Pizza Hut. Everyone including Renu and myself were pleasantly surprised at how close the taste was to home!

Well that was the end of our tour. I’ve decided to keep posting experiences here in this same blog post despite the fact that there are over 500 images already here. It’s serving as a public diary for me. Hope someone can benefit from it.

We cannot thank Vivek from Elegant Journeys enough! With so many mediocre tour guides here in India, he truly is a cut above the rest!

Car Buying Experience

Oh boy, this is a big one… So today we went to Superon Hyundai in Gurgaon. We are determined to get Renu’s father to replace his 2006 Maruti Alto. We’ve been on the hunt for something new. We’re stuck between the Hyundai i20 Asta or the Suzuki Swift Zxi. Where does one start talking about the car buying experience here…. Firstly, almost no cars are in stock. Only the unpopular ones are plenty in supply. The Hyundai i20 and the Suzuki Swift are very popular here, so the wait times are anywhere from 4-8 weeks. I also saw on the board that the Suzuki dzire has something like a 20 week wait time. Turns out the i20 is made in Chennai and the Swift is made here in Gurgaon.

I’ve never purchased a car here in India, so i knew it would be an eye opening experience for me. Firstly, the dealerships. They aren’t particularly inviting. They don’t even let you park in their parking lot, you are expected to park on the street. That would never fly in the US…. Then, when you walk in, nobody comes up to you asking if you are interested in some help. So you have to track someone down from sales. Once you do that, you ask for a test drive. It seems that we always miss the window for a test drive. Always.

Finally, we had a test drive in a Suzuki Swift tonight… car was ok. But most of the features are things that come standard in the US. This is to be expected in an emerging market. But then there are surprises…. things like reverse cameras available on both models. Go figure.

We’ve yet to settle on a car yet, but the whole process thusfar has been a real headache. Imagine walking into a dealership, being told there are no cars to test drive, they are out of brochures on the car. And there is a 4-8 week wait for the car. What do they think? That makes me want to put down a downpayment? I have no idea what sales model they follow here. I guess the masses must follow a monkey-see monkey-do model here where they don’t even need to test drive. If it’s good enough for Sudeep down the street, it’s good enough for me. Very strange experience for me…

Court Experience

Today I had the luxury of going with Renu to the mini-secretariat. Which is essentially a small governmental office of which you can perform local legal proceedings such as land deals, marriage/divorce etc… We were here to do a power-of-attorney transfer for land between Renu and her Dad. I’m not sure how the power-of-attorney transfer occurs in the US, but i assume it’s something along the lines of two parties attending a notary in which they both sign a paper and it goes into legal files regarding a piece of land, or the letter becomes the personal property amongst the two parties.

Let me preface the following paragraphs with the fact that I’ve been to India several times, including a couple for non-tourist purposes. Well, upon arriving at the mini-secretariat i was flabbergasted that attorneys (Advocates in Indian speak) actually operate in open-air market like settings:

I was stuck sitting for some time so i decided to open the law book on our advocates desk and much to my amusement (And I’m quite positive, yours….) i saw the following laws/scenarios listed:

Holy carp! This is the sort of thing that gives India the ass-backwards reputation it sometimes gets. But this is real… (Again, please note, i absolutely love India. It’s a country-in-progress. Just as the US is…I mean it no harm, but i couldn’t believe, page after page of these obscure and extremely specific laws).

Later the next day, we went to complete this process. Which meant we had to pay about 4-5 different people varying amounts and visit about 9-10 different windows. It actually reminded me a lot of this (The bureaucracy part.).

Doing this for many years, we’ve photographed many amazing couples in love…

…But never have I witnessed a couple that adored each other so much. It was almost reminiscent of the ‘Shmoopy’ episode on Seinfeld, where at first it was cute, then you wanted to kill them. Except, with this couple, you realized it was real and it wasn’t an act. During a speech by a close friend, he mentioned that he realized they were meant for each other when with a group of friends, Holly was trying to tell a story but forgot a particular piece of the story and Ryan insisted they give her a minute to remember that part of the story. It was a nice speech.

When Holly first contacted us, I thought she was a scammer! She emailed me stating that she was just proposed to in Paris under the Eiffel Tower and that they went on vacation to Israel and found a priest there that would be presiding over the ceremony. So I’m sitting here – “Ya, right… any other parts you want to add to this elaborate concoction?“ But true to life – they were real and so were their stories. Turns out that was just the tip of the iceberg… for Ryan’s bachelor party, he took his groomsmen to Nicaragua to re-enact some wartime stuff that occurred down there.

Crazy, but awesome.

Working with Holly and Ryan was fantastic, their energy and adoration for each other really made our jobs easy. Their wedding began at the Harvard Memorial Church and ended at the Boston Harvard Club Wedding, Downtown.

I told these two that they should start a blog of their endeavors…. I’d follow it. (See two photographs at the bottom of this post.)

Nina and Joe are having their wedding next summer at the State room and she wanted to incorporate the fall foliage into Boston engagement photography. So even with our hectic schedule we squeezed her in this week. And it worked out great…

As with any engagement session, you learn things about your clients and I certainly learned quite a bit with these two. Firstly, they both served in the Marines and they met in Baghdad. (I’m guessing they won’t be returning there for a honeymoon.) Secondly, Nina has a big thing for shoes… A really big thing. Her shoe collection for the engagement shoot could rival the cost of gear in my camera bag. Ok, ok, not that bad, but wow, shoes.

We went around Boston to several locations that were picturesque and included foliage-laden shots. Enjoy!

Sayjal and Santosh. What a pair…

Sayjal as a client is like a photographer winning the lottery… she’s that rare client that comes around maybe once or twice a year that not only says she wants a unique session, but is willing to actually put the work in to make it a unique session. She makes our job very easy…

Santosh was a most willing participant and when I joked that – “you have no idea what you are in for” when we first met up for their session, he said “Oh, I know what we are in for” and he did. No complaints, he went with the flow and because of their unique traits, their session completely rocked. It was a team effort, one of many before their wedding I’m sure.

This Indian Engagement Photography was photographed exclusively in Rhode Island, including Newport and Providence. We look forward to their wedding in mid-2013!

Kristen and Mike had a very intimate and regal XV Beacon Boston Wedding. The rooftop overlooks all of Beacon hill in its fall glory.

Hard to ask for anything better than that. The XV Beacon Hotel is a beautiful hotel right in the heart of downtown Boston. Pair that with award winning restaurant and wine cellar Moo.

We had a beautiful day around Post Office Square and Beacon Hill proper. They were a fantastic couple to work with and we wish them the very best in their future!

What we have here is a spectacular Falmouth Cape Cod Wedding.

Hilary and Justin were as funny as they come. From Hilary fake-kissing her girls to Justin putting his glass on top of the wedding cake, I haven’t laughed so hard in quite some time. We did their engagement session earlier this year on one of the coldest days of the year.

Hilary couldn’t have a wedding without her dog Miley being present and Justin was very accommodating throughout the day driving around Falmouth on the way to the beach and lighthouse to get those beautiful Cape Cod style photographs. (With a twist as you will soon see…)

They had their reception at the Flying Bridge in Falmouth. A nice seaside event facility and restaurant.

Caren and Dan had a beautiful Peabody Essex Museum Wedding.

When we first did a walk through, i couldn’t see it in my mind. But when we arrived at the day of the wedding – holy smokes! What an amazing venue with fabulous up-lighting and beautiful decor.

I started out with Dan and Thuy started with Caren. Seeing couples around their family really gives you insight into that family, even if only for a few hours and witnessing how great Dan’s parent’s were, it really made us realize what a great family they are. After going through Caren’s photographs you can see the same thing. Another perfect merging of families. We love it.

We did their engagement session several months ago and hit it off immediately. They dealt with the cold weather and we tried to make Boston look a little more warm…

We spoke about some locations around the city and when Dan mentioned he had a hookup for One Post Office Sq. I said let’s do it! So with the sprawling white marble lobby we were able to finally fulfill the dream of photographing in that lobby. No longer did we have to drool while walking/driving by it, like a little kid passing by a Toys R Us.

The wedding turned out amazing and we highly recommend this venue, what a beautiful day it was!
